Musical Moe
Guess what fandom I’ve recently taken interest in? What? Don’t know? Vocaloid!
What’s Vocaloid, you ask? Well, I put a wiki link up there for a reason, fool. :p But to make a long story short, it’s a set of Japanese programs that produce a synthesized voice that can sing and say whatever you want. To make this even more interesting, each version of the program has a different voice and different character applied to them. Each character has their own personalities, and then there’s sub and fan characters created by changing settings on one of the previous programs. In short, it’s crazy awesome.
Anyways the programs and characters are really popular and thus fans have made various music videos using the programs and characters. Here’s a few of my favorites (though Teto technically isn’t a Vocaloid, she seems to be accepted as one by the fans):
So with all these cute and well designed characters, awesomely advanced voice synth program, and amazing fan videos, it’s REALLY hard not to become a fan of the mass amount of Vocaloid stuff out there. Now if I can just decide on my favorite character. Currently I’m quite fond of Miku, Neru, Teto, and Gumi.
Also it might be a good idea for me to mention that Gumi isn’t actually the newest Vocaloid, I think the newest one is Sonika. However Sonika’s character design is terrible and her voice isn’t as good as a lot of the previous Vocaloids in my opinion, so I decided to use Gumi instead. So sue me.
Now the Levan Polkka is another bag of worms. Said song had become insanely popular thanks to that insane Leek Spin Bleach animation that had been going around the net for quite sometime (and referenced by Shelly in a previous strip). Well Vocaloid Miku did a cover of this song complete with leek driving the song’s popularity on the net even further. It’s so popular that now all the Vocaloids have practically done the song, even the ones that don’t have their own program (like Neru and Haku) or are part of a different program (like Teto). So it seems impossible for any of the Vocaloid characters to NOT do the Levan Polkka. Thus the inspiration for this comic.
So Vocaloid is awesome. Check it out sometime.
PS. EBAY!

Cute! And amusing.
But it’s “Ievan Polka”, actually. The uppercase I can look like an “L”. You’ll see the Wiki entry redirects you.

If you hadn’t pointed it out, I would have. Yes, it’s an uppercase I not a lowercase L. I with a sound like in the name Ianto Jones (character on Torchwood)

You haven’t heard some of the… less than poppish original songs people have made with Miku, have you? And it’s almost always Miku that the Japanese artists give the overly creepy/yandere songs to. (WARNING: PRECEEDING LINKS MAY CREEP YOU THE HELL OUT)
Pemmy was… almost eerily in character.

For those who don’t know, Teto is the most popular character based off of UTAU, which is basically the freeware alternative to Vocaloid (which… runs about $100-200 USD PER CHARACTER). Fans are somewhat divided on the UTAUloids in general, but Teto does find her way into quite a few Vocaloid videos, especially ones of Miku songs.

I hate the Vocaloids, one of the dumbest fads ever. While they are cute designs, their voices are terrible. It’s quickly become an extremely annoying internet meme…
Besides, Orihime is the original leek girl, not Miku.
